About Us

The Department of Mathematics of Union Christian College ranks as one among the best in Mahatma Gandhi University. Started in 1925, it was upgraded to a postgraduate Department on 1965 and a Research Department in 1999. Our Research Department produced the first ever Ph.D. in Mathematics from an affiliated college of the Mahatma Gandhi University.  The Department is well equipped with a computer lab of 18 systems and a Mathematics library with 1793 books and journals.

Presently, the Department comprises six permanent faculty members, with more than 10 years of service, three guest faculty (including 2, teaching Statistics) and 137 undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students.

The Department offers three value-added courses, Basics of Statistics Using Microsoft Excel, Mathematical Typesetting Using Latex, Problem Based Course in Analysis and a MOOC Course on Organic Farming. The Problem Based Course in Analysis is offered by our alumnus, Ms. Amrutha K.S., Research Scholar, I.I.T. Kanpur.

Annually, the Department hosts national/international seminars/workshops, facilitates interactions with research experts, conducts Alumni interaction and arranges career, competitive examination orientation/ skill development seminars/workshops, all aimed at providing students with a wholesome education. To create an interest/mathematical curiosity in the masses, the Department organizes an Inter School Quiz Competition – CIPHER for school students, an intercollegiate Thasnim Memorial seminar presentation competition (instituted by our Alumni) – for college students annually and participates in exhibitions/live demonstration.

The activities of the department are formulated and conducted in accordance with the following Mission -Vision statements of the department.

Vision: The Department envisions a learning and research ambience that fosters reasoning, innovative thinking, and the whole person development of students so that they can contribute positively to society.

Mission: To help students develop mathematical thinking through dynamic teaching – learning and to  equip them to use this knowledge ethically in real-world contexts.
