The Department of Mathematics at Union Christian College, Aluva is recognized as one of the leading departments under Mahatma Gandhi University. Established in 1925, the department was elevated to postgraduate status in 1965 and became a Research Department in 1999. Notably, it produced the first Ph.D. in Mathematics awarded by an affiliated college of Mahatma Gandhi University. The department boasts a well equipped computer lab with 18 systems and a dedicated mathematics library housing around 2000 books and journals.
Currently the department has six permanent faculty members, each with over a decade of teaching experience and three guest faculty members, two of whom specialize in Statistics.
To enrich student learning, the department offers several value-added courses including Basics of Statistics Using Microsoft Excel, Mathematical Typesetting Using LaTeX, A Problem-Based Course in Analysis (offered by alumna Ms. Amrutha K.S., Research Scholar at IIT Kanpur), A MOOC course on Organic Farming.
The department actively organizes national and international seminars and workshops, fosters interaction with research scholars, and hosts alumni engagement programs. It also conducts sessions on career guidance, competitive exam preparation, and skill development to offer students a well-rounded academic experience.
The department consistently produces excellent results in university examinations. In recent years, several students have secured positions among the top 10 ranks at the university level.
To foster mathematical interest and outreach, the department organizes 'CIPHER' – an inter-school quizcompetition and ' Thasnim Memorial Seminar Presentation Competition' – an intercollegiate event for college students (instituted by alumni) every year.
The students from the department also regularly participates in exhibitions and live demonstrations.
